Third World Network (TWN) is an independent non-profit research and advocacy organisation founded in Malaysia in 1984.[1] Its stated aim is to strengthen cooperation among civil society groups in the Global South and advocate for policy changes in favour of developing countries and ecologically sustainable development.[2]
TWN is headquartered in Penang and has offices in Kuala Lumpur, Geneva and Delhi, as well as a global network of researchers and regional secretariats in Montevideo and Accra.[3][4] TWN is an accredited observer to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).[5][6]
Founding and development[edit]
TWN was founded in Penang, Malaysia in November 1984 during an international development conference organised by the Consumers Association of Penang, a Malaysian non-profit organisation focused on environmental issues and consumer rights and protections.[7][8]
Malaysian economist and journalist Martin Khor was the executive director from 1990 to 2009[9][10] and served as an advisor to TWN and chair of its board[11] until his death in 2020.[12][13] The current executive director is Chee Yoke Ling.[14][15]
Since 2000, TWN has received support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, an American philanthropic foundation.[16]
Publications[edit]
TWN publishes a quarterly magazine,Third World Resurgence, which covers topics such as economics, development, health and the environment from a Third World perspective.[17] The organisation also publishes Third World Economics, a fortnightly magazine covering the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and related issues,[18] and SUNS, a daily news bulletin.
