"This is a Life" is a song by Son Lux featuring Mitski and David Byrne. The song was released on March 8, 2022 as the lead single for the soundtrack of the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. The song was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards. The song was received generally positively by critics. Daniel Kwan described the song as a "more emotional, more vulnerable pop ballad."[1]
Development[edit]
In an interview with Song Exploder, Ryan Lott of Son Lux revealed his initial concept of the song was a duet with two contrasting voices. [1]
While in the process of looking for vocalists for the song, Daniel Kwan, a director of Everything Everywhere All at Once, sent Lott his 2021 Spotify Wrapped. Mitski, who was in Kwan's top five artists, was contacted by Lott and pitched the idea of the song, and was "super into it."
After recruiting Mitski for the song, Lott thought it "sure would be amazing to get David Byrne." He said, "That's so like, not expected, but that would be so amazing!" Upon reaching out to Byrne, he responded in under 24 hours.
Critical reception[edit]
Pitchfork wrote that "it endearingly captures [the album's] heart with unremitting sincerity."[2]
Sound of Life wrote that the song opens with "a dramatic, almost kitschy fanfare – a sort of tongue-in-cheek reference to 21st Century Fox or something," and that "[the string accompaniment] could easily have been found in a Disney movie eight years ago.[3]
Promotion[edit]
The song was performed at the 95th Academy Awards, with Stephanie Hsu taking the place of Mitski as a vocalist.[4][5]
