Thomas Jong Lee, commonly known as “Tom” Lee is an Asian American macro investment strategist, businessman, media personality, full-time CNBC contributor [1], entrepreneur, venture capital investor, and real estate investor. Lee is known for his evidence-based approach to macro research, which holistically incorporates fundamental, macroeconomic, cross market, technical and survey analysis to service market and strategy views.
Lee has been profiled by national media including the Wall Street Journal which featured Lee as the cover article, Thomas Lee Said 'Buy' as COVID-19 Caused Stock Market Meltdown [2] based on the investor response to several high profile investment calls made in 2020.
Lee is the first major Wall Street Strategist to provide formal research coverage of Bitcoin to his clients which was covered by the media at that time. [3] His research has been quoted on CNBC, Forbes, MSN, Fox Business, Bloomberg, Reuters, Yahoo Finance, Business Insider, Seeking Alpha, Wall Street Journal, and CNN as well as on his social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
Lee's research has also attracted critics, as the evidence-based approach often clashes with conventional wisdom. In 2002, a publicly listed company Nextel was critical of Lee's research, who was at the time, a research analyst at JPMorgan. This discord gained national media attention and was profiled in the November 22, 2002 Wall Street Journal article, Unhappy Firm Bites Back: Nextel Says, Analyze This.[4]
Lee's retweets from James Todoro [5] in early August 2020 sparked controversy as highlighted by the September 9, 2020 CNN article, A New Front in Coronavirus Disinformation: Wall Street Research [6] stating Lee's retweets of Todaro's tweets as alleged coronavirus misinformation. Lee has also appeared on CNN Business's MarketsNow. [7]
In 2014, when Lee started his own research boutique advisory firm, Fundstrat, there were multiple national media articles profiling his departure from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. [8] [9] [10] Lee is the co-founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors and currently serves as the Head of Research for Fundstrat Global Advisors and is an advisor to NewEdge Wealth, a CT-based wealth management firm [11].
Business Career[edit]
Prior to co-founding Fundstrat Global Advisors, Lee served as Chief Equity Strategist of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. from 1999 to 2014. Before serving in that role, Lee served as the Telecommunications Equity Research Analyst in addition to the role of Small-cap Equity/ Bankruptcy/Reorg Strategist (2004-2010) at Kidder, Peabody & Company and Salomon Smith Barney.

Lee received his BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with concentrations in Finance and Accounting. He is a CFA charterholder [12] and is an active member of CFA Society of New York and the NY Economic Club.
