Thomas Asselman

Thomas Asselman (2001) is a Dutch musician and producer based in Zürich, Switzerland. Known for blending jazz, house, and bossa nova influences with contemporary instrumental and lo-fi aesthetics, Asselman has released several solo albums and singles through European independent labels such as Delicieuse Musique, Chill Ghost Records, EgoPlanet, Vinyl Digital, and DQBT Records. His 2023 project Amsterdam Again received attention within online jazz and electronic music circles for its fusion of acoustic jazz textures and rhythmic electronic production.[1]

Early life and education

Thomas Asselman was born in Dordrecht, The Netherlands, and grew up in the nearby town of Papendrecht. He began experimenting with music at a young age, learning DAW's, piano, bass, and percussion. Without formal conservatory training, Asselman developed his sound independently through experimentation with electronic production tools and jazz performance techniques. He later moved to Rotterdam before relocating to Zürich, Switzerland, where he continues to produce and record music.

Career

2010s: Early recordings and lo-fi releases Asselman began releasing self-produced tracks in the late 2010s, gaining early attention on digital streaming platforms and within the European lo-fi and chill-jazz community. His early catalog features a range of relaxed, melodic compositions influenced by hip-hop sampling, live jazz instrumentation, and ambient textures.

2020–present: Amsterdam Again and collaborations In 2023, Asselman released the jazz-house album Amsterdam Again, which expanded his sound into more rhythmically complex and harmonically rich territory. The record combined live saxophone and piano improvisation with electronic percussion, showcasing his hybrid approach to organic and digital production. Throughout his career, Asselman has collaborated with other independent producers and instrumentalists, including Saib and Sinnr. He has released multiple singles and EPs with international labels such as Delicieuse Musique, Chill Ghost Records, EgoPlanet, and Vinyl Digital, and his work has appeared on curated jazz-house and lo-fi playlists. Asselman has performed as both a live instrumentalist and electronic producer, using layered saxophone loops and percussion alongside digital sequencing.[2]
