Career and research
Calame is the Managing Director of the Gibbon Experience, an ecotourism initiative in Laos focused on conservation, community engagement, and wildlife research.[2]
He has served as a scientific advisor for wildlife documentaries and has led guided field research in Lao forests. He has co‑authored multiple herpetofauna studies from Lao limestone karst ecosystems, including:
- a new *Lycodon* (wolf snake) species from central Laos (2020)[3]
- "New country records of reptiles from Laos" (2014)[4]
- "A new species of *Cyrtodactylus* from Khammouane Province, Laos" (2014)[5]
- "Morphological and molecular review of the *Gekko* diversity of Laos" (2015)[6]
His photographs have been used in field research on Laotian reptiles and amphibians. A gecko species, *Cyrtodactylus calamei*, was named after him in recognition of his contributions to herpetology in Laos.[7]
