Thomas Cowley

Maj. Thomas Justin Cowley (16 June 1893 – 28 May 1959), DCM,[1] MM was an English military major who fought in World War I and World War II. He was born in Lancashire, England. He was best known for earning many significant awards during the two world wars.

Life

Cowley was born in 1893. In 1914, he enlisted as a Gunner (Private) and got promoted to Bombardier (Corporal) in 1915.[2]

While fighting in the war, he earned the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal[2]

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on the 11th of November 1915, for staying up all day making telephone repairs under heavy enemy barrage fire during the Battle of the Somme,[2] after five soldiers were either killed or wounded. It was due to this that communications were kept intact during an action.[3]

After the war, he married Eva Cowley, and he continued to live in Lancashire. He fought in World War II and was promoted to Major.

Death

Cowley died on the 28th of May, 1959, in Mawdesley, Lancashire, United Kingdom, at the age of 65.
