Thomas Douglas Stimson (1828–1898) was an American entrepreneur and businessman who played a significant role in the timber industry of the Pacific Northwest. He is best known as the founder and owner of the Stimson Lumber Company, which became one of the largest and most successful lumber companies in the region.

Early life and career

Stimson left his childhood home in New York at the age of fourteen[1] He started his career in the lumber industry working a logging claim in Michigan in the 1850s.[2][3] In 1853 he married Achsah Spencer in Grand Rapids.[4] Together they had six children. He then moved his family to Chicago for a number of years before eventually retiring to Los Angeles in 1890.[1]

Stimson Lumber Company

In 1873, Stimson founded the Stimson Clark Manufacturing Company. This would later become the Stimson Mill Company, and eventually would be incorporated into the Stimson Lumber Company. This became one of the most prominent lumber companies in the Pacific Northwest. The company specialized in the production of high-quality lumber and timber products, which were in high demand as the region experienced rapid growth and development.

Under Stimson's leadership, the company grew rapidly and expanded its operations throughout the region. By the late 1880s, the Stimson Lumber Company had become one of the largest employers in the Pacific Northwest, with several sawmills, logging camps, and other facilities throughout the region.

Legacy

Stimson's contributions to the timber industry of the Pacific Northwest were significant and long-lasting. His company played a major role in the economic development of the region and helped to establish the timber industry as one of the key sectors of the regional economy.

Today, the Stimson Lumber Company is still in operation, and it remains one of the largest and most successful lumber companies in the Pacific Northwest. Stimson's legacy as an entrepreneur and business leader continues to be celebrated by historians and industry experts alike, and his contributions to the region's economy and history are still remembered and honored to this day.

Stimson's house, built in 1891 in Los Angeles, California, is on the National Register of Historic Places.[5]
