Thomas (Tommy) Hodges is an American higher education administrator, mathematics education researcher, and currently serves as the Dean of the College of Education at the University of South Carolina[1]. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Executive Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina. He is also the Founding Director of SC-TEACHER[2].

Personal Life[edit]

Hodges was born in 1978 in Nashville, TN. He attended Belmont University where he majored in mathematics, minored in business administration, and was certified to teach in grades 7 - 12. He was also a member of the Belmont Bruins baseball team. Hodges earned his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in mathematics education. He and his wife, Jennifer Hodges, have three children.

Early Career[edit]

Hodges taught mathematics in middle and high schools in Nashville, TN before pursuing advanced degrees. During his time at the University of Tennessee he worked as a graduate research assistant on the Appalachian Mathematics and Science Project funded by the National Science Foundation[3]. There he conducted research with and provided professional development to middle school mathematics teachers across rural Appalachian regions of Eastern Tennesseeand Eastern Kentucky. He later joined the Tennessee Governor's Academy for Mathematics and Science as a mathematics instructor in Mathematics for the Life Sciences, Elementary Statistics, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus I.

In 2009, he joined the faculty at Western Carolina University as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, focusing on elementary and middle level mathematics pedagogy. In 2012, Hodges joined the faculty at the University of South Carolina as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, with promotion to Associate Professor, and then Professor.

Academic Administration[edit]

In 2016, Hodges was named Interim Chair of the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education[4]. Following a national search during the 2016 - 2017 academic year, Hodges was selected Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. In 2020, he was named Executive Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs. In April 2021, he was appointed interim Dean of the College of Education at the University of South Carolina[5] by then-Provost William F. Tate IV. Following a national search in the summer and fall of 2022, Hodges was announced by Provost Donna K. Arnett as Dean on October 2, 2022[6].
