Thomas Geoffrey Barlow

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Thomas Geofrey Barlow (25 September 1915- 27 May 1975) was an English pediatrician who developed a clinical test for the recognition of hip dysplasia called the Barlow test, often performed in combination wit the Ortolani test.

Dr. Barlow was born in Eccles, Greater Manchester, England. He attended Manchester Grammar School and Victoria University, where he received a degree in anatomy with a particular interest in comparative anatomy. He graduated with a degree in medicine in 1939 and held surgical and orthopedic appointments at the Royal Albert Infirmary, Wigan. He joined the RAF Medical Service in 1941 and worked at the RAF Hospital, Rauceby. He practiced at the Hope Hospital and obtained the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in 1949. He subsequently served as a senior registrar in the orthopedics to the Salford group and Ashton Hyde Hospital.

During his practices, he developed an interest in congenital hip dislocations and devised the Barlow test to assess development dysplasia of the hips in newborns. The Barlow test is often performed in conjunction with the Ortolani test, sequently on each hip (not simultaneously on both hips). The Barlow exam is performed by adducting and flexing the hips. The examiner places his/her fingers along the lateral proximal femur and applies light to moderate posterior force to the hip. In a dislocated hip, a positive exam elicits posterior hip dislocation out of the socket.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Barlow's interests included photography, cars, and sailing. He was a honorary medical officer to the life boat station. He was married twice and had two sons and a daughter by his first marriage. He died at his home in Abergele on 25 May 1975.
