Thomas Lee Goodman (October 6, 1954 - September 26, 2008) was an American arts producer, director, and legal publisher. He is best known for opening CrossCurrents venue in Chicago.[1]

CrossCurrents Theatre[edit]

In 1978, Goodman opened a performance venue known as CrossCurrents, 3207 N. Wilton Street. It housed, among other events, several prominent theatre and improvisation companies[2] such as ImprovOlympic,[3] New Age Vaudeville, and The Annoyance Theatre.[4]

Notable Productions and Acts

New Variety[edit]

Thom Goodman and Richard O`Donnell created and produced The New Variety show upstairs of the Italian restaurant Bellagio on Clark Street in downtown Chicago. The New Variety, which was hailed by the Chicago Tribune as "a cabaret for the 90's,"[12] was a fast-paced, ever-changing volley of acts hosted and booked by O'Donnell that included award-winning jugglers, fire-eaters, comics, and sketch comedy groups. In August 1993, the New Variety moved to the Chicago Improv, (504 N. Wells) and was responsible for changing a faltering 3-ring comedy presentation into a successful variety format.[13]

Legal Publishing[edit]

In the late 1990s, he partnered with Chuck Carmen at Illinois Legal Times, a trade publication for the state's legal profession. Carmen and Goodman published another legal trade the Corporate Legal Times, aimed at in-house corporate attorneys.[14]

Death[edit]

Goodman died on Friday, September 26, 2008, after suffering a massive heart attack while in his car on Chicago's North Side. He is buried at Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park.[15]
