LIFE

Thomas Grimshaw, son of John Grimshaw victualer and Workhouse Master, and was baptized Thomas William Grimshaw on the 20th December 1817 at Northampton All Saints Church.(Church of England Baptisms 1813 - 1912 Record No. 692).

Thomas Grimshaw never married and died on the 20th February 1875 at the Leeds Infirmary and was buried at the Beckett Street Cemetery,Leeds.

WORKS

Thomas was a Portrait Painter by profession, travelling the country fulfilling commissions. He specalised in portraits particularly of children, often with their pets and ponies and paintings of favourite hunter horses. In 1844 Thomas painted his most famous work, a portrait of John Clare, the poet, which hangs in Northampton Library.Other works include "The Trial of the Pony" now hanging in the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, York and a painting "A Saddled Dark Bay hunter by Mounting Steps" on display at the National Trust, Calke Abbey.
