Thomas Hyde (composer)
Thomas Hyde (born 5 January 1978) is a British composer and academic.
Life[edit]
Hyde was born in London and studied at Oxford University and the Royal Academy of Music where his teachers included Robert Saxton, Simon Bainbridge and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. He was Manson Junior Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music (2001-2) and in 2017 was elected an Associate of the RAM.
He is currently[when?] on the staff of the music department at King’s College, London.[1] In June 2019 he was elected to a Senior Research Fellowship at Worcester College, Oxford[2] where he has also taught for a number of years.
As well as his composing and teaching commitments, Hyde is chair of the Lucille Graham Trust, a charity that supports music education work in London, and a member of the Little Missenden Festival committee and Presteigne Festival Advisory Group.
He has written a biography of the Welsh composer William Mathias and a study of the English composer David Matthews published by Plumbago Books[3] in 2014.
Key works[edit]
His largest work to date is the one-man opera, That Man Stephen Ward, about the Profumo scandal with a libretto by David Norris. Premiered in 2008 it was revived by Nova Music Opera at Cheltenham and Presteigne Festivals[4] in 2015. A commercial recording, featuring baritone Damian Thantrey in the title role, was issued by Resonus Classics[5] in autumn 2017.
His second operatic work[6] is an adaption of Muriel Spark’s short story "Aiding and Abetting" about Lord Lucan. The librettist is the author Alexander McCall Smith.[7]
Other notable works include a symphony for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (2018), a comedy overture inspired by Les Dawson for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales premiered at the 2018 Lichfield Festival, a setting of the Magnificat for The Sixteen[8] commissioned by Concertgebouw Bruges, a string quartet (2009-10) a violin sonata for Jennifer Pike (2012) and a piano trio (2016).
