Thomas Jefferson Young (1921-1995) was an American writer, known for his debut novel, A Good Man.
Career
Thomas Jefferson Young served in the United States Army Air Corps as a bomber pilot during World War II.[1][2]
After completing his bachelor's degree in 1946, he was in public relations with the American Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors in Dallas, Texas, though later moved to New York. In 1951, Young received the Eugene F. Saxton Memorial Trust Fellowship, which helped aspiring writers complete their project. He then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, finishing his debut novel, A Good Man, in 1953.[1]
A Good Man was well received by critics. The American Library Association named it one of their top fifty notable books of the year.[3]
Personal life
Thomas Jefferson Young was born October 1, 1921, in Oma, Mississippi, to Clara Boutwell Young and Thomas Shelby Young.[1]
He graduated from Monticello High School, then Hinds Community College in 1941, before receiving a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1946.[1] He later attended Tulane University,[2] though he did not complete his studies.[1]
In the 1960s, Young returned to Oma. He died in Winnsboro, Louisiana on March 31, 1995.[1]
