THOMAS MAR DIOSCOROS
Thomas Mar Dioscoros was a Bishop from the Jacobite Kanaya community who reunited with the Catholic Church of Rome. Thus making him the First Bishop of the Malankara Catholic Knanaya community.
Early Life
Thomas Mar Dioscoros was born on 4 January 1884, the second son of Thomman Kuruvila, of the ancient Thenalady Family in Chingavanam, and Naithi Amma. His father, Thomman Kuruvila, was a member of the Travancore Praja Sabha.[1]
Episcopal Ministry
He completed his education at CMS School, Pallom, and CMS College, Kottayam. Bishop Mar Gregorios of Parumala recognized his interests in spiritual matters and ordained him as a deacon when he was eighteen. He studied Syriac, the regulations, and the liturgical practices. When he was twenty-eight years old, Archbishop Mar Saverios Edazhikkal Gheevarghese of Knanaya Diocese ordained him a priest. On 11 November 1926, he was consecrated bishop by the Patriarch Ignatius Elias III in Jerusalem and bestowed the name Mar Diascoros. When he returned to his land, he assumed office as the auxiliary bishop of Mar Saverios. On 11 June 1927, he took charge as the Second Head of the Knanaya diocese or which is currently the Malankara Syriac Knanaya Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church. His time in office (1927-1939) was a period of development for the community.[2]
Reunion with Malankara Catholic Church
The significant Malankara Reunion that took place on 20 September 1930, under the leadership of the Servant of God Mar Geevarghese Ivanios, made him enthusiastic to join the Malankara Catholic Church. He was reunited and joined the Syro Malankara Catholic Church on 12 November 1939 at Trivandrum and confessed the Catholic faith in the presence of Archbishop Mar Geevarghese Ivanios.[3] The sudden departure of Thomas Mar Dioscoros left a vacancy in the hierarchy of the Syriac Jacobite Church, prompting the Patriarch to appoint Clemis Abraham as the next bishop. After almost 77 years of Thomas Mar Dioscoros' death, the Catholic church appointed Gheevarghese Aprem for the pastorial needs of the Malankara Knanya Catholic Community.
Death and Legacy
Thomas Mar Dioscorus died on 21 February 1943 on Kohane Sunday. His mortal remains are kept in a special tomb adjacent to St. Thomas Bethany Church in Tirumoolapuram.
