Thomas Meagher Hurling Club is a coed American hurling club based in Missoula, Montana. The club was formed in 2015 as an outgrowth of the four-time NCGAA championship winning University of Montana hurling program.[1] They are members of the Northwest division of USGAA[2] and regularly compete in tournaments across the Pacific Northwest.[3]
Overview[edit]
The club are named after the late Irish nationalist and former acting Territorial Governor of Montana, Thomas Francis Meagher.
Thomas Meagher HC competed in their first USGAA finals in 2016 in Seattle at the Junior C level. They were defeated by Twin Cities Robert Emmet 2-8 to 0-5 in the preliminary stages of the tournament.[4]
The team are very involved within the Irish community of western Montana and regularly demonstrate hurling at Irish and Celtic festivals and events in the area.[5] One such demonstration is the annual match-up against Wolfe Tones HC[Note 1] at Montana Tech’s Alumni Coliseum during Butte’s St Patricks Day celebrations.[6]
McEneaney Cup[edit]
The club, along with the Montana Grizzlies Hurling team, annually host the McEneaney Cup, Montana’s premier hurling tournament, in late April. The tournament is named after Terry ‘Turbo’ McEneaney, a Missoula native and early benefactor of hurling in the area.[7]
