Schmelter began his career in food and beverage operations in Germany and the United Kingdom. He later moved into operational leadership roles within InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), holding management positions across Europe and the Middle East.[1]

Between 2002 and 2006, Schmelter served as General Manager of Crowne Plaza Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.[2] In 2006, he led the pre-opening of Crowne Plaza Gurgaon in India.
He subsequently held senior regional roles across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Indochina, Malaysia, and Vietnam, where he was involved in multiple hotel openings and operational leadership assignments.[3]
United Arab Emirates
In October 2020, Schmelter was appointed Area General Manager at IHG Hotels at Dubai Festival City.[4]
In this role, he oversees a multi-property cluster comprising InterContinental Dubai Festival City, InterContinental Residence Suites, Crowne Plaza Dubai Festival City, and Holiday Inn & Suites Dubai Festival City.
