Thomas Scientific
Thomas Scientific is a scientific products distribution company headquartered in Swedesboro, New Jersey.[1] The company provides supplies, equipment, chemicals, and supply chain services to the scientific community – supporting laboratory research and automated workflow solutions, biopharmaceutical, medical device, clinical diagnostics, cleanroom, and other related end markets, both domestically and internationally. They are the largest pure-play distributor of scientific products in the United States.
History
Founded in Philadelphia in 1900, Thomas Scientific operated as a family-owned small business for much of its history. The company was originally named “Arthur H. Thomas Company” after its original Founder and primarily offered Bausch & Lomb products during its early years, in addition to duty-free imports from Europe. In 1914, Thomas published a second iteration of its catalog, which would soon be known as the “bible” of the industry thanks to its detailed illustrations and comprehensive product descriptions. The company name was formally changed to Thomas Scientific in 1983; a year later, construction began on a new corporate headquarters in Swedesboro, New Jersey that remains in use to this day.[2]
Throughout the ensuing few decades, Thomas Scientific continued to lean on its family-oriented roots and commitment to serving end users from its New Jersey warehouse through customized solutions. This allowed the company to develop a large, reliable customer foundation supported by a strong distribution network spanning North America and 120 other countries.
Thomas Scientific gained additional notability after being acquired by The Carlyle Group in September 2017[2]. The company has since made four strategic acquisitions[3] of its own, thus broadening its product portfolio and expanding distribution reach: Phenix Research Products (December 2017)[4], Denville Scientific (January 2018)[5], American CleanStat (May 2018)[6], and E&K Scientific (May 2018)[7].
A registered contractor for the United States Federal Government, Thomas Scientific was awarded nine figure contracts with the Department of Homeland Security and the Defense Logistics Agency to provide swabs, viral transport media, and more during the COVID-19 pandemic.[8] The company has also secured exclusive distribution deals with top private sector companies, including Tecan, and has continued to pursue and secure partnership agreements with other life science manufacturers like Agilent Genomics, Microbix, and more.
