ThorCon is a 4th generation nuclear fission company developing a molten salt reactor[1]. The company was founded by Jack Devanney, a shipbuilding professional who believed the main problem with nuclear power was cost overruns from poor construction management[2]. Devanney designed a power plant that would be standardized, manufactured in a shipyard, and towed to a site at shore[3]. He chose a molten salt reactor core design, modeled after the US Oak Ridge National Lab's "Molten Salt Reactor Experiment" (MSRE) in the 1960s, as the simplest-to-manufacture reactor core and one with inherent passive safety features[4].
ThorCon is developing its technology in Indonesia and plans to deploy power plants throughout Southeast Asia once its technology is proven and licensed[5].
In 2020 ThorCon received a series A investment from Chris Anderson, the curator of TED Talks and a climate-focused investor[6].
