History[edit]

Thread was launched in 2012 by CEO Kieran O’Neill, CTO Ben Phillips, and Creative Director Ben Kucsan.[2]

Thread was part of the Y Combinator accelerator in San Francisco, which led to one of its first paying customers being Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram. After graduating, Thread moved from San Francisco back to East London.[6]

The brand was selected by Y Combinator as one of the 20 most promising start-ups.[2]

In June 2016, Beringea led a £4 million funding round with participation from existing backer Balderton Capital and a number of angel investors, bringing total funding for Thread to around $16 million.[5] In 2018, Thread raised a £16.7 million investment lead by the H&M group, through its venture capital arm H&M CO:LAB, which had also participated in the 2016 funding round[7][8].

In October 2018, Thread launched its iOS app[7][9]

In 2019, Thread was listed fourth in Prolific's list of London's most valuable fashion startups [9]
