ThunderCloud Subs
ThunderCloud Subs is a local submarine sandwich shop based in Austin, Texas.[1] ThunderCloud Subs has been voted "Best Sandwich" in Austin by The Austin Chronicle.[2]
History
ThunderCloud Subs was co-created by Andy Cotton and John Meddaugh on March 25, 1975.[1] In 1980, Mike Haggerty joined as a franchisee of the shop, and also helps as director for the Turkey Trot.[3][4] ThunderCloud Subs has since been known as a marker of "Old Austin" culture.[5][6] As of 2022, it has grown to a chain of more than 20 stores in Austin, with some locations also based in San Antonio and Georgetown.[1]
Since 1991, ThunderCloud Subs has solidified itself as an Austin original and staple through hosting the annual “Turkey Trot.”[7] The Turkey Trot is a marathon that raises money to help homelessness in Austin. They have been successful in raising over $4.5 million through charity Caritas of Austin.[8] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Turkey Trot was forced to be virtual in 2020, but has since returned to in-person participation.[9]
