Thushara Cooray

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Thushara Cooray is a Sri Lankan official cricket scorer and statistician who predominantly works as a Test match scorer for the home matches involving Sri Lanka men's national cricket team.

Career

He began his career as a cricket scorer with Sri Lanka Cricket and his career trajectory began as a cricket scorer during Sri Lanka's home test series against New Zealand in 1987.[1] He made his debut as a cricket scorer during Sri Lanka's first Test match of the three-match series against New Zealand at Colombo Cricket Club Ground, a game which ended as a draw and the series was eventually cancelled midway owing to the threat of militant group Tamil Tigers, with only one test match being completed during the course of the series.[2][1]

Thushara came up with an insightful, thought-provoking, out-of-the-box thinking approach when he realised that the trajectory of international cricket was going very much tilted towards technology-driven data analytics and it eventually elevated the rapid advancement of the sport.[2] Thushara implemented a paradigm shift approach by incorporating modifications and tweaks to compile an updated version of the scorebook that also included every detail of a day’s play by paying attention to important details by not just sticking to facts and figures, but paying attention to every important technical aspect of the game as well. He developed ideas to instill a level of curiosity in the minds of the people to depict the essence of how a particular match has progressed during a day’s play.[2]

He also served as a statistician and match scorer for S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia especially in its Annual Big Match Encounter against the rivals, Royal College which is popularly dubbed as the Battle of the Blues. On 6 February 2025, he reached a landmark milestone of 100th test match as an official scorer during the second and final test match of the two-match test series between Australia and Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium which was contested as part of the Warne–Muralitharan Trophy.[3][2]
