Tiffani J. Bright, PhD, FACMI, is an American biomedical informatician and researcher whose work focuses on algorithmic fairness, health equity, and the detection of bias in clinical artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning systems. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computational Biomedicine and Co-Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education (CAIRE) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Over the course of her career across academia, public health, government, and industry, Bright has been recognized as a national leader in biomedical informatics and AI ethics and has used her experience to promote diversity and inclusivity in informatics through local and national initiatives.[1] A member of the Kiskiack Nation, she is recognized as the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in biomedical informatics in the United States, and the first Black student to earn a doctorate in that field from Columbia University.[2][3]

Early life and education

Bright graduated from Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the College of William & Mary (2001) and a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC, 2004), where she was a Meyerhoff Scholar. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University in 2009, advised by Dr. Suzanne B. Bakken, and supported by a National Library of Medicine Biomedical Informatics Predoctoral Fellowship. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University's Division of Clinical Informatics (2010–2011).

Career

Early career

Following her postdoctoral training, Bright worked as an informatics consultant (2011–2013) and briefly returned to Columbia University as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist (2013). She then joined the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where she served first as Clinical Liaison/Quality Improvement Advisor and later as Director of Medical Informatics, Surveillance, & Epidemiology (2013–2015), working with data from New York City's correctional health system.

From 2015 to 2017, she served as a Senior Staff Fellow at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), focusing on health information technology, clinical decision support, and dissemination research. She then joined Washington University in St. Louis as Director of Informatics Development (2017–2018) and Instructor in the Division of General Medical Sciences (2018–2019).

IBM Watson Health

From 2019 to 2022, Bright served as Biomedical Informatics Evaluation Team Lead at the Center for AI, Research, and Evaluation at IBM Watson Health. In this role, she led evaluation research for AI-based health offerings, established a 10-year academic-industry research partnership with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and co-led projects promoting health equity and reducing health disparities. She received the Q3 Watson Health General Managers Award in 2020.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Bright joined Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2022 as Co-Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education (CAIRE). In 2024, she was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Computational Biomedicine. Her laboratory focuses on the development and evaluation of methods to detect and mitigate bias in clinical predictive models, with an emphasis on vulnerable and historically underserved patient populations.

Her current research centers on agentic AI approaches to auditing clinical machine learning models for bias before they are deployed in patient care settings, with a focus on perinatal health and other high-stakes clinical domains. Early work demonstrating the application of multi-agent AI architectures to fairness auditing in early-onset colorectal cancer has been published as a preprint.[4] Related published work includes a reweighting-based bias reduction method for adverse event prediction models,[5] as well as research on ethical frameworks for trustworthy, human-centered AI in biomedical research.[6]

Bright has spoken publicly about the need for transparency and equity in clinical AI, including the importance of patients understanding when and how algorithms are shaping their care.[7]

Research contributions

Bright's early research focused on clinical decision support systems, including the development of an ontology-based system to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing, published in the Journal of Biomedical Informatics (2012).[8] She was lead author of a landmark systematic review of clinical decision support systems published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (2012), one of the most comprehensive assessments of the field at the time.[9]

More recently, her lab published research evaluating bias-mitigated predictive models for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders in JAMA Network Open (2024),[10] and a policy commentary on inclusive AI governance co-authored with Keith C. Norris in JAMA (2025).[11] She also co-authored a community-based framework for ethical AI decision-making in healthcare, published in JAMIA Open (2025).[12]

Leadership and professional service

Bright has been deeply involved in diversifying the biomedical informatics workforce. She created the AMIA First Look Program in 2017, a scholarship program that introduces undergraduate women — with an emphasis on those from historically marginalized communities — to the field of biomedical informatics. As of 2022, 87 students had participated, and the program has since served as a model for other AMIA groups.[13]

She served as the inaugural Chair of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (2020–2022), overseeing a $150,000 budget and leading 75 volunteers across five subcommittees. Her leadership resulted in AMIA committing to a permanent DEI committee with dedicated funding. She was elected to the AMIA Board of Directors (2017–2022) and served on its Executive Committee (2020–2021). She also served on the Women in AMIA Steering Committee (2016–2022), including as Pathways Subcommittee Chair, working to advance the careers and leadership of women in the field. She has also served on review panels for the National Science Foundation, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
