Tijana T

Tijana Todorovic, known by her stage name as Tijana T, is a Belgrade-based DJ, music journalist and vocalist. She is considered one of the most prolific figure in the Serbian electronic music scene.[1] She started her career locally by creating different electronic music shows on Serbian TV. Her music style is comprised of different genres as acid-dominant techno style with elements of breakbeat, house, electro and synth-rock.[2]

Music career[edit]

Her passion for music developed since the childhood. Her uncle was a music passionate and records collector. He would take Tijana in her first house party in a club in Belgrade when she was 14. During her adolescence she would listen to radio shows on radio B92.[3] In the early 00's she started her music journalism career in different TV and radio shows in Serbia. She was still studying and was offered a job producing music reports on public TV in Serbia.[4]

Tijana started her career as a host at VJ Hour, a music show which aired at state broadcaster every day. Later on she hosted live coverage from Exit Festival, and interviewing different DJs from the festival. From 2003 until 2008, she was a spokesperson for the Exit festival. She was also moderator of Jelen Top 10, a program focused on local music coverage.[5]

International recognition[edit]

Since her collaboration with Abe Duque, she has gained more recognition in the international electronic music scene. She toured together with Abe across Europe. They met in 2005 in EXIT festival and started the tour together, performing in live shows. Afterwards, Tijana focused on her career as a DJ and started to play in different clubs in Belgrade, before gaining more recognition in the international music scene.

Since the start of 2016 she has been booked in over 300 shows, in 40 countries, in six continents. In 2013 she performed at “We love ..at Space Ibiza”, making her the very first Serbian DJ to play there. She has performed in different international clubs like Panorama Bar, We Love… Space in Ibiza, Output New York, The Block Tel Aviv, Kaiku in Helsinki, Arma17 Moscow, Tresor in Berlin and festivals like Dimensions, Hideout, Flow and Exit.[6]

On April 24th 2020, Tijana played live a 12-hour set as a charity stream in the club named Drugstore in Belgrade. This set was done as a way to help collect donations for the Drugstore crew and help financially the clubbing scene, struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. This set was done amid a weekend curfew ban in Serbia. In an interview for RA, Tijana spoke about the impact that COVID-19 pandemic has left on the clubbing scene in Belgrade: "Also, the government doesn't mention anything in terms of help and support for this industry, and we have no estimations on when this extraordinary situation will be over. Everyone is confused and just waiting".[7]

Personal life[edit]

Tijana studied Spanish language and philosophy before engaging with music journalism. In her interviews, she mentions the influence that the local scene in Belgrade has had in shaping her music style. She describes how clubbing and music created a force of resistance within Serbia’s youth during the NATO bombing, leading to the emergence of raving culture.[8]
