The following is a timeline of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance that was established with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949. Since then it has expanded to include 32 member states.
20th century
1940s
- April 4, 1949: The North Atlantic Treaty is signed in Washington, D.C. and establishes the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The treaty is signed by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States who became the founding members of NATO.[1][2]
- August 24, 1949: The North Atlantic Treaty became effective.
1950s
- January 1951: Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower begins plans for Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).[3]
