Tobias Daniels (born November 16, 1982, in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey)[citation needed] is an American filmmaker and talent acquisition specialist based in Los Angeles.[1][2] His directorial debut was the documentary Black Velvet, which centered on African American LGBT artist T-Boy.[3]
Biography
Though both of Daniels' parents were performers,[4] he considers himself the "black sheep artist" in his family and recounts that they "struggled to grasp [his] love of entertainment."[2] He spent his school years in both choir and theater and wrote his first play, Birds Fly North, in fifth grade.[1] In the early 2000s, he posed as Muhammad Ali for David LaChapelle's photograph in Taschen's GOAT.[5][1] He then studied acting at Stella Adler Studio of Acting in Los Angeles and liberal arts at University of Illinois, where he wrote a TV pilot that was picked up, but never produced, by Nickelodeon.[1]
His experience at Stella Adler inspired him to move fully from acting to directing, producing, writing, and talent acquisition.[1][2] After college, he worked as a videographer for Popstar![1][3] and was a contributor to AFROPUNK.[6][7]
Daniels co-created Salsa With Me, a dance video for children.[8][9] In 2012, he was executive producer of Dakota Aesquivel's film Janked,[10] which screened at the Cannes Film Market.[citation needed] He directed the documentary Black Velvet, which follows the African American LGBT artist T-Boy.[3]
He is the founder of Castle Sky Entertainment.[4]
