Tom Chang MD is an internationally renowned clinician, surgeon, educator, author, the founder of the Retina Institute of California and co-founder of Acuity Eye Specialists. Dr. Chang is noted for his specialties in the surgical management of macular degeneration, complex diabetic retinopathy, clinical epidemiology and instrument design.

Fluent in English, Spanish and Mandarin, Dr. Chang has delivered over 120 lectures in 15 countries and written over 50 peer-reviewed articles. The current associate editor of the journal Ophthalmology, he also operates as Editor-in-Chief of the Retina Times and serves on the scientific advisory boards of several Fortune 500 companies, including the editorial board of Evidence Based Eye Care.

Education

Dr. Chang has an extensive educational background. He graduated from Sir John A. Macdonald C.I. second in his class in 1982, then went on to receive his undergraduate degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Western Ontario. He went on to receive his medical degree at the University of Toronto Medical School in 1988. He completed his clinical post-graduate training starting with a general comprehensive medical internship at Toronto General Hospital, then went on to complete his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Chang then received the Ophthalmic Pathology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University/Wilmer in Baltimore, Maryland; a Macular Diseases Fellowship from the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida; and a Vitreo-retinal Surgery Fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed his studies with a Master of Health Science in Epidemiology at the University of British Columbia Department of Health Care and Epidemiology in 1999.

Professional Positions

During his career, Dr. Chang has held positions as an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology; Clinical Instructor and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia; Sub-Investigator for Clinical Trials for Bausch & Lomb; Principal Investigator for Clinical Trials for Oculex Pharmaceuticals; Fellowship Program Director, Medicare Compliance Officer and Director at the USC School of Medicine; Medical Director for Doheny Macular Degeneration Center; Investigator for the California Center for Clinical Research and the Retina Institute of California.

In November 2005, he founded the Retina Institute of California (RIC).

Awards and Accolades

Sharing his gifts with the world, Dr. Chang was part of the team that performed the world’s first surgical implantation of stem cell treatment for dry macular degeneration, which was in collaboration with the Johnson & Johnson Stem Cell organization. To date, the doctors at RIC have performed more sub-retinal stem cell surgeries than any other center in the world. Dr. Chang has also been listed in Who’s Who; Best Doctors in America; received the PSI Foundation Research Award; was awarded the O-1 Visa from the Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services granted to individuals of extraordinary abilities; the Alcon Book Prize for Resident Research; the award for Excellence in Resident Training, and the top teaching award by ophthalmology residents for three consecutive years.

Dr. Chang holds medical licenses in California, British Columbia, Georgia and Ontario. He also holds an FRCS (C  ), FLEX certificate, LMCC, DEA and is a Diplomat of the ABO.

Dr. Tom Chang is affiliated with a number of professional memberships and affiliations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Retina Society; Macula Society; the American Society of Retina Specialists; Club Vit; Umbo Society; Retina Institute of California DBA Acuity Eye Group; Trilogy Eye Medical Group Inc. DBA Acuity Eye Specialists; San Gabriel Ambulatory Surgery Center; California Center for Clinical Research; Orange ASC and Renaissance ASC. Dr. Chang was also the previous ophthalmologist for the NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies.
