Politics[edit]

Combs was born into a political family and became involved with the local political community early in his life; when he was elected to the Jefferson County School Board in 1970, he was the youngest official in Texas at 20 years of age. He served as a countywide trustee for the Board until 1976 and acted as its Vice President from 1975 to 1976[2]. After leaving the Board, Combs was elected to the Beaumont City Council in 1978[1]. He served as both Councilman and occasional Mayor Pro Tem until 1982[3], when he mounted an unsuccessful campaign against Jack Brooks to serve as Congressman for Texas' 9th congressional district.

Personal Life[edit]

Though he left office in 1982, Combs stayed involved with politics through serving as Chief of Staff for Congressman Nick Lampson and District Director for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.[4] He has since moved into the private sector where he is the founder and current President of Tom Combs and Associates[5][6], which specializes in contract negotiations between private-sector companies and the government.
