Thomas Adam Kirkman (born December 20, 1967) is a fictional character in the Netflix and former ABC show, Designated Survivor. The role, which is played by Kiefer Sutherland, is based on the designated survivor which is the role a cabinet member takes on in a large gathering of government where many members of the United States presidential line of succession are present. In the case of an attack where many members including the President are killed, the designated survivor becomes President.
Kirkman is the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who is about to be fired by President Robert Richmond which is why Richmond makes Kirkman the designated survivor for the annual State of the Union Address. Shockingly, a bomb goes off, killing the President and all his Cabinet. Kirkman is rushed to the White House to be sworn in as President of the United States. Early in his presidency, he is tasked with finding who is responsible for the bombing and bringing them to justice.
