Tom Kitwood

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Thomas Marris Kitwood (1937 – November 1, 1998) was an English social psychologist and gerontologist who pioneered the concept of person‑centered dementia care. He founded the Bradford Dementia Group (renamed to the School of Dementia Studies in 2014) at the University of Bradford and authored Dementia Reconsidered: The Person Comes First (1997), a book credited with shifting dementia care practice away from a purely biomedical toward a relational model.[1][2]

Career

Kitwood earned a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences from King's College, Cambridge, in 1960 and completed a Ph.D. at the University of Bradford in 1977.[3] In 1992 he established the Bradford Dementia Group, where he and nurse Kathleen Bredin developed Dementia Care Mapping, a tool for evaluating quality of life in care homes.[4][5][6][7]
