Tom Myers (baseball)
Thomas Galen Myers III (born August 12, 1969) is the area scouting supervisor for the Chicago Cubs. On October 11th, 2011, Myers joined the Chicago Cubs Scouting Department after spending 14 years coaching at the collegiate level, for Porterville Community College, Santa Clara University and UC Santa Barbara from 1997-2011.
Early Life and Family
Myers was born in Los Gatos, California. He attended Archbishop Mitty high school (1987 graduate) and played baseball for head coach Bill Hutton. Myers dad, Thomas Myers JR, played college football at San Jose State University where he was captain of the 1963 team. Myers also spent many years as a football official in the NFL, USFL and the college ranks. Terrence Myers, brother, is currently VP of the Performing Arts of Video.
Myers received his BA from UC Santa Barbara in History in 1993. Myers later completed his Masters Degree in Education from Azusa Pacific in 2000.
Myers played outfield and pitched at San Jose City College from 1998-1989 for Barry Woodhead. 1990, Myers was a member of the University of Arizona baseball team and played for Jerry Kindall. 1991, Myers attended UC Santa Barbara where he pitched and played for Al Ferrer. Myers garnered All Big West Honors and was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 1991 Amateur Player Draft. From 1991-1993 Myers was member of the Oakland Athletics farm system, 1994 with the Baltimore Orioles and finished his playing career in 1995 with the St. Louis Cardinal’s organization.
Myers began his coaching career in 1996 at Porterville Community College as an assistant coach. The summer of 1996 Myers was a player coach in the Dutch Professional League in Haarlem, Holland. 1998, Myers accepted a position as pitching coach for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos of the Big West Conference. From 1998-2001 Myers coached for the Gauchos then accepted the same position to coach at Santa Clara University from 2002-2004 in the West Coast Conference. Myers later returned to UCSB from 2005-2011 as Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. From 2007-2011 Myers coached in the top collegiate summer leagues across the country. 2007 Myers served as pitching coach for the Santa Barbara Foresters of the California Collegiate League. 2008 Myers served as head coach for Peninsula Oilers of the Alaskan League and guided the Oilers to a 28-16 record. From 2009-2011 Myers was head coach for the Brewster Whitecaps of the prestigious Cape Cod League compiling a 63-59-10 record with 2 playoff-off appearances while at the helm. During his time as a college coach, Myers mentored and coached 109 players that have signed a professional baseball contact and 43 that have played in the Major Leagues.
Myers is entering his ninth year as an amateur scout for the 2016 World Champion Chicago Cubs. Myers territory covers Central Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Since 2012, Myers has recommended twenty-two players that have been selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft. Fourteen of those players have signed professional contracts and currently have played at various levels in the Chicago Cubs development system.
