Tom Trafalski
Tom Trafalski[1][2] (born July 16, 1968) is a Emmy & Gemini Award winning[3] Canadian music editor, sound designer, and former recording engineer, best known for having edited & recorded many albums & film scores in multiple genres, including Transformers (Feature Film), The Pillars of the Earth [TV Mini Series], Gods and Generals [Feature Film], and The Very Best Of [Eagles Music album].[4][5]
Early influences[edit]
Trafalski[6] has had an interest in music since his early childhood[7] in Canada. Trafalski began his formal musical training at age 6 with piano and voice. He attended & toured extensively with St. Michael’s Choir from grade school through high school, among other music and dance troupes. In these early years music and musical entertainment permanently became the centerpiece of his life.
Education[edit]
Trafalski earned a degree in piano & theory from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Trafalski developed an interest in computers and discovered a natural aptitude for the technological sciences. This combination of techno-creativity ultimately led him to comprise his expertise into synth/sampler programming, and music & recording software.
Trafalski enrolled, and graduated from the Recording Engineering program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, and focused on advancements in high technology and its possibilities in the music and media industry.
- Scarlett Heights High School Class of 88, Toronto, ON[8]
- St. Michael's Choir High School 1976-1987, Toronto, ON[9]
- Fanshawe College - Applied Arts & Sciences1988-1990, London, ON[10]
Professional career[edit]
Upon entering his engineering career, he began working for studios including Eastern, Manta, and Sounds Interchange in Toronto Canada. The studios there split their bookings between music and post. In addition to working on bands such as The Eagles[11], Anne Murray, Dan Hill, John McDermott & Rik Emmett, Trafalski devoted much of his creative efforts to posting films, shows, TV series, and commercials. He worked on projects including The Phantom of the Opera Live Show, The Kids in The Hall TV Series, as well as numerous features, IMAX films, and movies of the week.
The Canadian production company, Rosnick/Mackinnon soon recruited him for exclusive work on all their sound design and editing projects. His work included editing & engineering commercials, cinema trailers, and various music projects.
During this same time Trafalski [12]completed the entire sound design and fx editing of the Genie Award Winning Ron Mann film "Grass". Other long form projects completed were music score and sound design on several independent shorts including Jeremy Hurst's "The Legacy".
In 2001, Trafalski [13]relocated to Southern California.
In Los Angeles Trafalski[14] began working for John Frizzel,[15] and became John's composing assistant, technical coordinator, and engineer. He worked with John on several major projects such as engineering the score to "Scorched", and "Gods and Generals" for which he did coordination, editing, and technical supervision, as well as episodes of King of the Hill.
The music score for the latter, jointly composed by John Frizzel [16]and Randy Edelman included an enormous 180 minutes of music recorded in Los Angeles, and Air Lyndhurst in London England. Frizzel and Trafalski[17] collaborated on a number of smaller television and music projects culminating in the music and technical coordination of the score for Joel Silver’s "Cradle 2 The Grave” & “Ghost Ship”.
Trafalski[18] began to focus his attention on composers and director/producers, locking in to music editing exclusively. Tom began work editing the music for composer Jim Dooley on various TV & Feature Projects including Pushing Daisies, & Daddy Day Camp.
Shortly afterwards Trafalski[19] began to frequent Remote Control, formerly “Media Ventures” and demand for his services started to expand.[citation needed]
Soon Trafalski [20]was music editing on movies such as “Man On Fire” for Harry Gregson-Williams, and “Steamboy", “Amityville Horror” & “Transformers” for Steve Jablonsky. Trafalski [21]worked on numerous feature films, TV shows & series for other composers at Remote Control such as Trevor Morris, Blake Neely, Jimmy Levine, Ramin Djawadi, as well as Stuart Thomas & Chris Bacon at James Newton Howard's studio. Trafalski was also hired by studios including Warner Brothers & Bruckheimer Film & TV, as well as director/producers David Nutter, Jonathan Nolan, Barry Sonnenfeld, Anthony Hemingway, Ray McKinnon & Bryan Fuller.
Trafalski's current projects are taking him from the studios in Los Angeles to New York, London, Prague, and beyond.
