Tom Williams is an American Computer Scientist specializing in human-robot interaction and cognitive systems. He is an assistant professor of Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines and the Director of the Mines Interactive Robotics Research Laboratory (MIRRORLab). His research interests lie in natural language based human-robot communication and robot ethics.
Education and career[edit]
Originally from Clinton, Oneida County, New York, Williams received his B.A. in Computer Science from Hamilton College in 2011, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science and Cognitive Science at Tufts University in 2017, focusing on natural language based Human-Robot Interaction. Williams' doctoral research established the first algorithms for open-world reference resolution, and new methods for indirect speech act understanding and generation grounded in Dempster-Shafer Theory, resulting in a dissertation entitled "Situated Natural Language Interaction in Uncertain and Open Worlds" [1].
Williams is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines[2]. His current research focuses on enabling social and moral competence in interactive robots, understanding the nature of robot identity, and exploring new paradigms for human-robot communication, including augmented reality. He is the recipient of Early Career awards from the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and NASA.
In 2020, Williams collaborated with other Colorado roboticists to launch #NoJusticeNoRobots, a petition effort signed by over 100 roboticists and other academics refusing to participate in or facilitate research performed in collaboration with law enforcement agencies. Williams has spoken about this campaign on a number of podcasts and news venues.
