Tom Wistrcill

Tom Wistrcill (born January 3, 1970) is an American athletics administrator who has served as the Commissioner of the Big Sky Conference since 2018.
Early Life and Education
The son of two high school coaches, Wistrcill graduated from La Crosse Central High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1988. He then attended Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, where he was a four-year starter and senior captain of the men's basketball team while earning a bachelor's degree in Media Communications in 1992. Wistrcill later received a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, Athletic Administration from the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota).
Career
Wistrcill has extensive experience at all three levels of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) -- as a Division III student-athlete, a Division II commissioner twice, and in Division I as a senior administrator for two Big Ten Conference athletic departments, a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic director, and a Football Championships Subdivision (FCS) commissioner.
At the beginning of his career, Wistrcill served as the commissioner of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate and Rocky Mountain Athletic conferences.
He worked for both the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota athletics departments. He then served as the athletic director for the University of Akron from 2009 until 2015, during which the 2010 Zips men's soccer team won the national championship.
After Akron and prior to the Big Sky, he served as a senior vice president for Learfield Communications.
Wistrcill was named commissioner of the Big Sky on Nov. 16, 2018.[1] In 2020 he received a two-year extension to his original five-year deal.[2] In 2025 he received a five-year contract extension that carries through the 2029-30 academic year.[3]
Wistrcill was selected to serve on the NCAA Men's Basketball Selection Committee for a five-year term that began in September 2022[4]. He was named Vice President of the Collegiate Commissioners Association in June 2025.[5]
Personal Life
Wistrcill and his wife, Kelly, have two children, J.T. and Jack.[6]
