Tōmei Powered inc. is a race engine developer and automotive tuning parts maker in Tokyo, Japan.
History
The company was founded as Tōmei Automotive (東名自動車) in 1968 in Kawasaki City. The founders were mostly members of a motorcycle racing team called Jōhoku Riders Club (城北ライダースクラブ, JRC), including Seiichi Suzuki and Kazuo Kubo. The company initially was a racing team and was one of the early examples in Japan in the 1970s.
Seiichi's brother, Shūji Suzuki, was responsible for accounting and was the initial president. Because Seiichi was a factory driver for Nissan, Tomei Automotive mostly worked on Nissan products. The team drivers included Kenji Takahashi, Akira Hagiwara, and Takayuki Kinoshita.
The name was changed to Tōmei Powered when the company moved to Machida, Tokyo in 1994, because a local garage named Tōmei Auto was nearby.[1]
Tomei Engine and Tomei Sports
In 1985, Tōmei Engine Company Ltd. (race and Ferrari engine tuner) was founded by an ex-employee, Osamu Imai. Also, Tōmei Sports (racing machine tuner/maintainer, and racing team/entrant) was founded in the same year by another ex-employee, Keikichi Nakano. These companies maintained a relationship with Tomei Powered, and Tomei Sports was the 1992 Japanese Formula 3 Championship champion with the driver Anthony Reid. Tomei Sports was also an entrant in the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC, "Super GT").
Tomei Powered USA
In October 2006, a subsidiary in the US was founded in California by the then-employee Eiji Mihara. In February 2014, the subsidiary Tomei Powered USA was made independent, taken over by Axesta Inc. founded by ex-president (2003-2014) Akira Sasaki and Eiji Mihara.[2]
'Tomei' brands
'TOMEI' brand in North and South America, Europe, and Africa is a registered trademark of Tomei Powered USA, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Axesta Inc., which markets "Real Speed Engineering" (R.S.E.) brand in Japan, Asia, and Australia.[2] 'TOMEI' brand in Japan, Asia, and Australia is owned by Tōmei Powered Inc.
