Tomer Lev

Tomer Lev (born 1967) is an Israeli musician. Currently active as a pianist, chamber musician and pedagogue, he was a founding member of the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music and is the school's current director.

Education

Tomer Lev studied the piano with his mother, Naomi Lev, and composition with composer Tzvi Avni. He graduated from the Thelma Yelling High School for the Arts[1] and went on to study at the Rubin Academy (now the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music) of Tel Aviv University with Arie Vardi and Victor Derevianko. He received a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he studied with pianist Gilbert Kalish.

Performing career

As a soloist, Lev first performed with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra at the age of 15 and since then has collaborated with all the major Israeli orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of conductors Zubin Mehta, Yoel Levi, and Jerzy Semkow among others. He has performed at Israel’s main concert halls, including the Charles Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv[2], Jerusalem’s Henri Crown Symphony Hall[3] and the Haifa Auditorium. Throughout Europe, Lev has appeared in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra[4], at Hamburg’s Musikhalle, the Rudolfinum in Prague, and the Philharmonie Hall in Berlin among others. In North America, Lev has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Merkin Concert Hall[5], the Glen Gould Studio in Toronto[6] and at Boston’s Tanglewood Festival[7]; he has also performed in South America, including at Buenos Aires’s Teatro Colón[8] and the Sala São Paulo. In the Far East, Lev has played at the Beijing Concert Hall and the Municipal Theater of Shanghai. As a chamber musician Tomer Lev joined the Israel Piano Trio[9] in 2006, and in 2011 he founded Multipiano, an ensemble dedicated to literature written for keyboard ensembles from piano in four hands to multi-hand combinations[10]. Multipiano has held more than 10 international tours worldwide and was awarded the Israeli Ministry of Culture Award for the ‘Best Israeli Chamber Ensemble’ in 2015.

Pedagogue career

Tomer Lev is the head of Israel’s Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, which is run jointly by Tel Aviv University and the Israel Philharmonic. In 2004, together with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Zubin Mehta and businessman Joseph Buchmann, Lev was among the founders of the school. He was appointed as the school's first director[11] that same year and held the post until 2009 when he was succeeded by conductor and bassoonist Zeev Dorman. In August 2015, Lev resumed his post as head of the BMSM.
