Tomomi Higashi (東 友美, Higashi Tomomi, born 28 March 1984) is a Japanese politician of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) and a member of the City Council of Machida, Tokyo.[1][2]

Biography[edit]

Tomomi Higashi (formerly Metoki) was born in Iwate Prefecture, but moved to Machida City as a young child.[3] After graduating from the Tokyo University of Agriculture, Higashi worked at a pharmaceutical company and an infertility clinic.[3][2]

In the Machida City Council [ja] election held on 25 February 2018, Higashi was elected to a four-year term with the second-highest vote total.[1][4] Her main political issues include supporting children and families, inspired by her mother's struggles as a single parent and her personal history with abuse and bullying.[3] Higashi contributed a chapter to a book on eliminating child abuse along with other regional city councilors.[5]

Higashi came out as asexual and x-gender[nb 1] during the General Interpellation of the 3 September 2018 Machida City Council Meeting, making her the first openly asexual elected official in the world.[6][7] After coming out publicly, Higashi received many comments on social media from people discovering asexuality and asexual people discovering they were not alone,[8] and she gave an interview in AERA magazine on why she chose to pursue support for LGBT issues in the Machida City Council and come out herself.[9] Higashi is also aromantic.[3]

Notes[edit]

  1. Higashi has said to use she/her pronouns when referring to her in English, though she doesn't have a preference.
