Tong Seng Mun

Tong Seng Mun (born 1920) is a wildlife dealer and owner of Chop Wah On, a medicinal products dealer, established by his father, Tong Chee Leong, in 1916.[1]

After studying at school, he worked at Singapore's police department. Before quitting his job in 1942 to inherit his father's medical oil company. Around 1949, he owned a pet shop at South Bridge Road.[2] He was always interested in wild animals, combined with being an avid collector and dealer. He was said to have kept a tiger cub (named Margaret) at Chop Wah On. These interests led him to realising his dream of opening a zoo at Pasir Panjang in the fifties. Once it opened in 1958 it was almost forced to close due to debts. As his England Pet Shop was also running into issues. Amounting to $3,500 debt that nearly saw zoo animals auctioned off for repayments.[3]

Tong Seng Mun later engaged as the consultant for the 'Van Kleef Aquarium' (1955-1991), Jurong Bird Park (1971-), and the Singapore Zoo (1973).[3]
