Toni Marek is an American author and former Phi Theta Kappa student officer who first came to national attention in 2015 after accusing PTK executive director Rod Risley of sexual misconduct.
Education and Phi Theta Kappa involvement
Marek attended Victoria College in Texas and served as a PTK student international officer during the 2013–2014 term.[1][2]
2015 allegations
Inside Higher Ed reported in March 2015 that Marek and another former PTK student officer alleged sexual harassment, intimidation, and inappropriate conduct by PTK executive director Rod Risley.[1] The report stated that Marek alleged Risley had engaged in unwanted touching during a PTK event. The Victoria Advocate reported on Marek’s claims in April, describing her account of alleged inappropriate conduct at a PTK dinner and her request for an independent investigation into the organization’s leadership.[3]
PTK’s board issued a public statement addressing the allegations and outlining its review process.[4]
In July 2015, Inside Higher Ed and the Clarion Ledger reported that Risley retired from his position following the controversy.[5][6]
Activism and petition
Marek has continued publicly criticizing PTK’s leadership. The Victoria Advocate reported in 2025 that she launched a petition on Change.org calling for reforms within the organization; the petition was has more than 17,000 verified signatures.[7]
Saving PTK and litigation
In 2025, Marek announced a book titled Saving PTK, which focused on allegations involving PTK leadership and conduct.[7]
Before the book was scheduled to be released, PTK filed for a temporary restraining order in Victoria County, Texas seeking to block publication.[8]
The dispute became the subject of the case Marek v. Phi Theta Kappa. The TRO was initially granted on an ex parte basis but was later dissolved after a hearing. A district court judge denied PTK’s request for a temporary injunction.[9]
Techdirt described the initial order as raising concerns about prior restraint under the First Amendment.[10]
