Tony La Russa Artist

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Born in 1917 in Brooklyn New York, Tony La Russa and his work exemplify the 20th century artist characteristics. Learning the basic techniques of calligraphy became a foundation for his future. His aptitude test in high school told everyone, including himself, that his life would be grounded in the arts. La Russa, a veteran of World War II, spent his life dedicated to his craft. Spending his career as a freelance lettering man, La Russa understood the science of being exact. Working tirelessly, he supported his family. His talent was not wasted in his work, but there was a desire, be it known or not to open his craft up to more diverse forms. His tag line for his business exemplified this fact, it was “Getting Loose with La Russa”. While being employed by advertisement agencies in New York City, he would spend his lunches at Sothebys and Christies to catch glimpses form artists like Picasso, from whom he drew influence. It wasn’t till the early 80’s that his own mind and feelings began to flow beyond the written word. A freeform style of visual poetry evolved from practice of precise detail. La Russa’s work finds balance and symmetry by exploring the art of line. Working solely in acrylic, due to his distaste for the smell of oils, La Russa would work diligently to understand the proportions to create his pastel like colors. Leaving Long Island, La Russa and his wife, Gail, found nature in East Cannan New York, where his art continued to evolve. He iterated many times to his spouse his fear of losing his ability to create. Even when faced with the reality of dementia, he held on to his craft till the end of his life. La Russa’s passion was art, he knew it, and everyone around him knew it. Exact in his practice and creative in his execution, his breathtaking pieces leave the viewer in control of the perception of each work.
