Tony Mafia (born Robert Lee Alderson, 1931 – 1999) was an American painter, illustrator, folk musician, and actor who exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the United States from the 1960s through the 1980s. His works were collected by cultural icons such as Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, and Jack Nicholson, and appeared in several public and private collections including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Early Life and Career

Born in Chicago in 1931, Tony Mafia chose a life of travel and expression from a young age.[1]

In his teens, he moved independently and later lived in various countries including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Mexico, as well as across the United States. His multifaceted artistic practice included painting, sculpture, folk music, theater, and film. He played folk guitar and banjo and acted in early New York off-Broadway productions and later in California-based television and documentary projects.

Artistic Style

Mafia’s work spanned watercolor, oil, ink, and mixed media, often in a figurative and surrealist tradition. His paintings frequently depicted ordinary people, mythological references, and cultural stories, such as his interpretation of the Belgian legend "Nello & Patrasche."

Later Life and Legacy

In his later years, Mafia was based in Antwerp, Belgium. He passed away in 1999. His work continues to draw interest, with debates over its rightful place in public view. A 2010s article highlighted that his culturally significant painting "Nello & Patrasche" was relegated to storage by the district of Hoboken, sparking local controversy.[3]
