Toon Lagoon is an area at Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure park in Orlando, Florida that is based on the cartoon and comic strip characters from King Features Syndicate and Jay Ward. The area’s main focus is on water rides, hence the name. The area opened in 1999, along with the rest of the park. The island is home to three attractions, including Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls, Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges. The area is located between Marvel Super Hero Island and Skull Island.

History

Universal was planning a new theme park in 1991 called Project X, at the same time, they acquired the rights to the works of Jay Ward (Including Rocky and Bullwinkle),[2] and incorporated the characters into a streetmosphere show at the Florida and Hollywood parks, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle Show (1992-1996), later plans where made for the characters to have a full presence at a second-gate park, Cartoon World, along with Popeye, Dr. Seuss, Looney Tunes, and DC Comics. [3] Ultimately, the idea later evolved into Islands of Adventure, Popeye, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Dr. Seuss were saved for the new park, while Looney Tunes and DC were scrapped due to licensing issues with Warner Brothers due to Six Flags acquiring them.[citation needed] The DC themed land was instead evolved into Marvel Super Hero Island, while Dr. Seuss got it’s own land, while Popeye and Rocky and Bullwinkle were combined into a very own land, Toon Lagoon, in addition with the license to other classic comic strip characters.
