Topobiology - An Introduction to Molecular Embryology[1] is a 1988 book by Gerald M. Edelman that proposes his Morphoregulator hypothesis of CAM and SAM action in the development and evolution of vertebrates and mammals. Edelman describes animal body plan development and evolutionary diversification via the differential spatiotemporal expression of cell surface molecules within the embryo during development. The book describes the mechano-chemistry that occurs at the cell membranes of cells that are undergoing the primary processes of development.

The book, Topobiology, is the second in a trilogy of books[2][1][3] that Edelman wrote to delineate the scope and breadth of his ideas on how a biological theory of consciousness and animal body plan evolution could be developed in a bottom-up fashion. In accordance with principles of population biology and Darwin's theory of Natural Selection.
