The Torch Gallery is an art gallery founded in 1984 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, specialising in photography.[1] The museum is regarded as a 'champion of avant-garde photographers.'[2]

History[edit]

The gallery was founded in 1984 by Adriaan Van der Have,[3] the founder of Art Unlimited, a publisher of art posters and postcards.[4] It was a continuation of Gallery Van der Have, which was founded two years earlier, in 1982,[5] and was described as 'the only experimental gallery within the commercial circuit'.[6] He was a believer in the potential of photography as an art form, and until his death in 2009, he was a promoter of photography, veejay-art and digital image editing in the museum, and was known for taking risks regarding new ways of expression.[7]

The gallery's initial location was a former umbrella factory on the Prinsengracht.[3] In the early stages, the featured artists came predominantly from Rotterdam.[8] However, being dissatisfied with the Dutch market, Torch focused on the international market by taking part in international art fairs.[3]

From 1988 to 1989, Torch Gallery had an annex in Cologne, Germany, a partnership with Galerie Onrust in Amsterdam.[4] In 1992, the gallery organised a discount show, in which all buyers had the chance to purchase works of art at a reduced price.[9]

In 2009, following Van der Have's death, his son, Mo, took over the curation of the gallery.[10]

Artists who have had their works exhibited at the museum include Anton Corbijn, Inez van Lamsweerde, Anthony Goicolea and Loretta Lux and Terry Rodgers.[7]
