Torrey Trust

Torrey Trust (born 1985) is a writer, educator, researcher, and professor known for her work in the field of education technology. She has designed several open educational resources that have amassed hundreds of thousands of views, including an infographic about assessing student engagement in online and remote classes.[1][2] and an educational Google slide deck about the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT[3]. She is the author of two print books: Transforming Learning with New Technologies (4th Edition)[4] and Kids Have All the Write Stuff: Revised and Updated for a Digital Age[5]. She has also published several open access eBooks, including Online Tools for Teaching and Learning[6], Building Democracy for All: Interactive Explorations of Government and Civic Life[7], Critical Media Literacy and Civic Learning[8], Web Design Basics for Educators[9], and Teaching with Digital Tools and Apps[10].

Trust's research and public outreach efforts to improve teaching and learning with technology amidst the shift to emergency remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic earned her the recognition of The 2020 Dean's List: 30 Higher Ed IT Influencers Worth a Follow[11].

Her co-authored article on EduCAUSE, “The Difference Between Emergency Remote Teaching and Online Learning,” was selected for the 2020 Association for Educational Communications (AECT) Annual Achievement Award[12] and recognized with the 2021 APEX Award for Publication Excellence[13]. This article has been cited as the most-read article in the publication outlet's history with more than 500,000 page views in just one and a half years since publication[14]

Biography

Torrey Trust was born in San Diego, California. She received her B.A. in Visual Arts (Media) from the University of California San Diego, her M.A. in Educational Technology from San Diego State University, and her Ph.D. in Education: Teaching & Learning from the University of California Santa Barbara. She is currently an Associate Professor of Learning Technology in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

As a leader in the field of education technology, Trust served as the president of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE)'s Teacher Education Network from 2016 to 2018 and was selected as one of five visionaries awarded by the International Society for Technology in Education for the 2018 Making IT Happen Award[15].
