Toru Ishida (石田 亨 Toru Ishida, born July 17, 1953) is a Japanese computer scientist specializing in Multi-agent system. He has been working on action research including Digital City Kyoto, Intercultural Collaboration Experiments, and Language Grid.
Biography
Toru Ishida graduated from the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University in 1976, and received a master's degree in Engineering from the Graduate School of Engineering of the same university in 1978. He became a senior research engineer, a supervisor with NTT Information Communication Processing Laboratories in 1989, and with NTT Communication Science Laboratories in 1991. Moving to Kyoto University, he became a professor in the Department of Information Science, Graduate School of Engineering. From 1998 to 2019, he served as a professor in the Department of Social Informatics, Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University. He has been a professor of Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University since 2019. His academic paths include visiting scientist/professor positions at Columbia University, Technische Universitaet Muenchen, Le Laboratoire d'Informatique de Paris 6, University of Maryland, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University, Xinjiang University and Hong Kong Baptist University[2].
He has been a fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), and Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) since 2002, 2005, and 2008. He was a 2011 President of IEICE Information and Systems Society (IEICE-ISS) and a vice president of IEICE from 2014–2015. He was a research supervisor of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) PRESTO Information Environments and Humans, and a member of Science Council of Japan from 2011–2017.
Work
Toru Ishida has been working on Autonomous Agents and Multi-agent system for more than twenty years. He worked for creating conferences on autonomous agents and multiagent systems including Multi-Agent and Cooperative Computation (MACC)/Joint Agent Workshops and Symposium (JAWS) (Japanese), International Conference on Principles and Practice of Multi-Agent Systems (PRIMA) (Asia/Pacific) and International Conference on Multi-Agent Systems (ICMAS)/International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS) (International). He served as a program co-chair of the second ICMAS, a chair of the first PRIMA, and a general co-chair of the first AAMAS. He was an associate editor of Journal on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (Springer), and a board member of the International Foundation on Autonomous Agent and Multiagent Systems (IFAAMAS)[3]
He started a project on Digital City Kyoto in 1988. The portal site was opened until 2001. He initiated the Intercultural Collaboration Experiments (ICE) with Chinese, Korean, Malaysian colleagues in 2002, a year after 9/11. In 2006, he began a project to create a language service infrastructure on the Internet. The Language Grid has been operated by Department of Social Informatics, Kyoto University (2007–2017) and NPO Language Grid Association (since 2018). So far, 183 groups from 24 countries join the Language Grid to share more than 226 language services.
He created Kyoto University Design School with his colleagues in Informatics, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Management, and Psychology. The school started in April 2013.
