Tossing of hands (Kleps) is a method of toss used to decide Winner/Looser of toss for a game. Such toss further leads to another actual game. This method of tossing is used mostly in southern India. This method was very widely used in traditional games.

Basic process of tossing

All players participating in a game extend one of their palms facing down and put them one on top of another. Then all of them together lift their hands from the stack and hold the palm in front of them either face-up or face-down. Whether to show palm face-up/down is individuals instant decision.

Types of games for which this method is used

There are 2 types of games for which this method of tossing can be used.

  1. Tossing to decide the last remaining person (looser/chaser) for games like Hide & Seek.
  2. Tossing to decide members of 2 different teams.

Deciding the last person/chaser

3 player tossing

  1. After tossing hands, if all the 3 people are showing the palms on the same side (either face-up or face-down), nobody wins and the process is repeated.
  2. If one among the 3 is showing hand in the opposite of the other 2 people, he/she is the Odd one and will be treated as winner in this round.
  3. This process repeats for finding the next winner until a the last player remaining is known.
  4. This last player is decided a chaser/looser.
Tie-Breaking

If there are only 2 players (or last 2 players remaining), a third person can participate as tie-breaker. There are 2 methods of breaking the tie.

  1. Method 1
    1. All the 3 players (which includes tie-breaking player) repeat the basic hand tossing process to decide the winner among the remaining 2 players.
  2. Method 2
    1. In this case the tiebreaker's palm will be placed on top of the stack.
    2. The tiebreaking person will also place his elbow on top of his palm.
    3. As the players toss their palm, the tiebreaker will shout either "Copies are Looser" or "Copies are Winners".
    4. Anyone who copies the tiebreaker's palm direction (face-up/down) will be either winner or looser depending on the shout given by the tiebreaker.

More than 3 players tossing

  1. In case there are more than 3 players, the minimum odd ones are declared as winners in each round.
  2. The remaining people repeat the tossing process.
  3. Example:
    1. If there are 3 or 4 players, then one person can be minimum odd-one and hence the winner in a round.
    2. If there are 5 or 6 players, then 2 persons can be minimum odd-onces and hence will be winners in a round.

Deciding the members of 2 teams

  1. In this case all players participate in hand tossing.
  2. In first round, the minimum odd-ones will become part of one team. (Say 2 out of 6 players showed face-up and hence become first team).
  3. Remaining people repeat process and minimum odd-ones in next round become part of the first team formed earlier.
  4. Once the number of people remaining and number people who have already formed team become equal, they stop the process.
  5. In this case the people who were remaining will form second team.
