Biography
During the closing stages of the First Libyan Civil War, Zayani commanded the El-Farouk Brigade positioned west of Sirte. In September 2011, he announced that an elder from Muammar Gaddafi's tribe had contacted him to negotiate a ceasefire and safe passage for civilians trapped inside the city.[1][2]
Zayani stated that he agreed to allow civilian families to leave Sirte while negotiating the surrender of armed pro-Gaddafi fighters, whom he said would be expected to surrender their weapons before departing the city.[2]
His brigade participated in the siege and eventual capture of Sirte by forces of the National Transitional Council.[1][2]
