Touradj Barman

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Touradj Barman is a technology inventor who directly contributed to the development of push messaging and several social media related technologies. Most of his technologies have been developed as the result of technology startups, for which he has raised substantial investments from well known business and technology leaders such as Irwin M. Jacobs, the founder of Qualcomm.[1]

Patented Inventions[edit]

Touradj has over seven granted US patents on a wide-ranging set of widely used Internet technologies.[2]

Push Messaging[edit]

Touradj's most notable contribution to Push technology involves the creation of a media-oriented push messaging system using two channels: a first shared channel that is a constantly open notifications channel, and a second channel that can be opened on demand to retrieve content.[3] This is how industry-leading push technologies such as Apple Push Notification Service and Google Cloud Messaging work. There is a constantly open channel that can be used to push a notification that new content exists at a certain location. Upon receipt of that notification, the user (or the device automatically) can open a second connection such as an HTTP connection to "pull" the referenced content. Before this invention, push messages were very small in size and to receive larger-sized content polling was often used. Polling is inefficient because it often involves a delay, uses bandwith and power. Instead it is better to receive a small notification that something new is available, then retrieve it.

Group Messaging[edit]

Touradj's inventions also include group messaging technologies such as those that formed the basis for Slack.[4] In this case, a list of group members is stored at one or more servers and messages can be sent to a group because the server knows who belongs to the group and can forward the message. Touradj's company GoGroups, founded in 2007 was one of the first companies to provide persistent group messaging.[5]

Media Lists[edit]

Touradj invented a mechanism by which isolated mobile apps can read and write from the same lists or containers of data.[6] The technology makes it possible for mobile apps to access shared media for viewing or editing, such as how an app can access photos or other files from Dropbox, iCloud and others.

Some of his patents have been acquired by large social media companies such as LinkedIn.[7]

Education[edit]

Touradj graduated from MIT in 2001 with an SB. He has an MBA from Yale School of Management.
