The Towers of America complex in Jersey City

Towers of America is an apartment complex in the Newport section of Jersey City in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. It consists of five towers: the Southampton Apartments, the Atlantic Apartments, the Riverside Apartments, the East Hampton Apartments, and the Pacific at Newport. The Southampton, Atlantic, and Riverside towers were completed 1998; the East Hampton tower was completed in 1999, and the Pacific in 2002. The Southampton and Atlantic have 36 floors, while the Riverside and East Hampton have 33. Those four are all 450 feet (137 m) tall and are tied as the 12th-tallest buildings in the city. The Pacific is 311 feet (95 m) tall and has 29 floors. It is the 32nd-tallest building in the city.

The complex totals 1,640 units.[1]

Although built in 1999 – 2002 it is seen as part of a larger long term revival in Jersey City. In 2015, Robert Cotter and Jeff Wenger, one of whom is the urban planning director for Jersey City wrote:

“Since 1980, 18 million square feet of office space have been developed on the Jersey City waterfront, generating the highest price per square foot office deals in New Jersey history and marking the success of the original ‘Wall Street West’ concept. Currently over 6,000 housing units are under construction with another 20,000 units approved by the planning Board. Much of this development is accommodated with high rise construction with approximately 28 buildings over 300 feet tall and 6 buildings over 500 feet with several more under construction. China Overseas has approvals for a new tower of 889 feet. Within a few years, Jersey City will overtake Newark as New Jersey’s most populous city….”[2]

It is being eclipsed by a larger building boom and architectural revival that is taking place in Jersey City's long suffering waterfront and warehouse district, which has now moved toward tall towers.[3]
