Trader Mickey is a 1932 animated cartoon in the Mickey Mouse film series, produced by Walt Disney Productions.[1]

Plot

While Mickey and Pluto were exploring the depths of Africa encounter a native tribe and are held captive at their village. After Mickey starts to play an instrument while being cooked alive, the entire tribe joins in their musical performance, accepting Mickey into their community.

Censorship

In this cartoon, the tribal villagers are exaggerated caricatures of African-American people. During this time period, it was commonplace for all types of films to have gags/jokes making fun of African-Americans in the United States thru blackface.[2] Today, films such as these are condemned and stop being showed in all sorts of media, even for private use, only ever being released on DVD in Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Black & White, Volume 2 in 2004.
